What happened?

If at any point the macOS server goes into login screen (e.g. after screen saver, or if I lock the screen manually), it never releases the keyboard. I can freely navigate mouse between server/client, but all keyboard input goes into the current user's password field, no matter which screen the mouse is currently at (and what type of field I select there)
