I'd like to be able to just see that the modifier has been activated - so light the command-key indicator but remove the space above it for the key that is pressed, afterwards.
I was hoping to use keycastr to let me know when my modifiers are malfunctioning (and preserve the rest of the space the overlay occupies).

Note to self and others, one solution would be to drag the window to the top of the screen, so it overlays the menubar area.
