As mentioned on README.md, the videos are currently hosted at the
following platforms/channels:

Now, BitChute is already a step up from YouTube, in the sense that it does not
require a BigCorp account just for "engagement". And while, in the case of
BitChute, the videos themselves may be distributed in a peer-to-peer manner
(disputed; see below), the two platforms themselves are still centralized and
proprietary. That is, if the main server goes down, so does all of the
metadata and comments.

So here are some pros of mirroring to a PeerTube instance:

  • FLOSS client and server (the only one that I know of)
  • Users can interact (e.g.: comment/reply/subscribe) from different instances
run by different people (i.e.: federation / less vendor lock-in)
  • Users can interact from different ActivityPub-enabled servers (e.g.: Pleroma,
    Mastodon)
  • It's easy to mirror the videos and comments (AFAIUI) to many different
    servers
  • Creative Commons content is encouraged on some instances -> more likely to
    have even more mirrors

Additionally, I think that all it takes for importing videos from a YouTube
channel is to enter its URL. See also
https://github.com/Chocobozzz/PeerTube/issues/754 for auto-syncing support
(currently WIP).

Note: LBRY is a "competitor", but the technical explanations from these
links seem accurate to me.
