What happened?

When using my Macbook Pro in clamshell mode (lid closed with external monitor attached) as the server and my Thinkpad, in a similar configuration, as the client, the mouse and keyboard on the client stop working. When I open the lid on the client, however, barrier input controls work as expected and all input on the client freezes.
