What happened?

Similar to #1042, but my server is Debian, client Ubuntu and mouse buttons 1 to 5 work for me.
It's the back and forward mouse buttons 8 and 9 that don't work on the client. Nothing happens in xev on the client when clicking buttons 8 or 9.

After upgrading my Debian machine to Debian 11 which has barrier package version 2.3.3+dfsg-1.1, all mouse buttons (1 - 5, 8 and 9) work now.
