Describe the bug

Volume control was working fine with my M2 Pro Macbook Pro connected to an LG monitor via HDMI>USB-C (usb-c port on laptop), but starting yesterday it stopped. The volume icons show up correctly but volume doesn't change. I'm on MacOs 15.3.2. Any insight?

When I try with BetterDisplay, same issue and it shows no DDC capabilities. However brightness control works fine.

Steps to reproduce

Change volume using keyboard

Expected behavior

Volume changes on external monitor speakers

Anything else?

No response

Environment Information (please complete the following information)

- macOS version: 15.3.2
- Mac model: M2 Pro MBP
- MonitorControl version: latest
- Monitor(s): LG 27UP850N

Issue observed on:

  • Mac Mini (2018)
  • macOS Sequoia
  • Samsung S8 LS27A800U monitor
  • MonitorControl 4.3.3
  • Connection: USB-C to USB-C

Problem: MonitorControl sound control sometimes fails to work with the monitor. Occasionally, it works as expected, but other times it doesn’t respond until I reconnect the monitor—either by physically unplugging and replugging the USB-C cable, or by switching to a different input source from the monitor’s display menu and then back to USB-C.

Audio control not working on Dell U2723QE

Brightness control works flawlessly, but I can't get audio control to work. When I press the volume keys I can see the volume UI changing but the audio volume itself stays the same. Already tried restarting, reconnecting and reactivating DDC/CI on the monitor.

For those who struggle, you can get Soundsource and enable Super Volume Keys which works for Dell Monitors. However, that software is not for free tho.

With a Dell U4025QW, the volume slider in the app works perfectly when clicking the desired volume with the mouse. The volume is immediately synced with the hardware configuration menu (even better than Dell's DDPM software which is noticeably laggy).

My keyboard is surely sending the "Volume up", "Volume down" and "Mute" keys as they used to work on MacBook Pro's own speakers as well as a previous LG Ultrafine 5K display. But the keyboard controls don't work with MonitorControl. The macOS volume overlay doesn't appear, there is no response and the volume doesn't change.

Version 4.3.3 Build 7123

Image

Update: DDPM was running in the background and preventing the keypresses from being read. Quitting that and only running MonitorControl fixed the issue.

Raising the same problem:

  • MBP M2 Max 32Gb RAM
  • Samsung Odyssey G5 27"
  • MonitorControl 4.3.3 build 7123

The settings in question:
Image

Reproduce:

  1. Lower volume to zero with keyboard
  2. Turn up the volume
  3. No sound being emitted
  4. Mute and unmute the speakers in monitor's OSD
  5. Sound is audible again

The volume control works fine until you lower it to zero. After that adjusting the volume slider is active and monitor is also showing a volume value, but no sound is being emitted through the external speakers attached to the monitor. The sound became audible when muting and unmuting the sound manually in the monitor's OSD settings. No need to kill the app or replug the monitor.
My best guess is that there is a value indicating mute triggering every time the volume is being adjusted to zero.

Note: When OSD scale for audio is being turned on, then the volume controls work as expected

@The-Magicians-Code - I'd recommend using BetterDisplay as it has a lot of additional options to configure how Mute should work. All MonitorControl features are available in the app for free. https://github.com/waydabber/BetterDisplay/issues/1248

Samsung ViewFinity S6 running through a UGreen KVM switch.

Audio works fine over HDMI.

Installed MonitorControl. Brightness controls work fine.

When I adjust the volume using the keyboard, the volume setting drops to a low level. Toggling the volume up raises the volume, but it never reaches the same loudness even after setting it to 100%. If I hit mute, the sound goes away, but never comes back, even after maxing it out again. Disabling MonitorControl does not restore audio and a reboot is required.

So I've seen you repeatedly suggest that the solution to various MonitorControl bugs is to pay $22 your other version of this app, BetterDisplay. If MonitorControl is quasi-abandonware and basically an advertising vehicle for BetterDisplay, you should be upfront about that and call it BetterDisplay Lite or something.

@42648594 - I just want to reiterate that all features found in MonitorControl are free in BetterDisplay, no payment or license required. Also there is no nag screen of any kind to make one pay. This is why I think it is fair to recommend the app. I do not expect MonitorControl users to get a Pro license. BetterDisplay is freemium, so you can use many features for free and some advanced features require a Pro license.

I'm experiencing the same issue only after updating from 4.2 to 4.3.3. It worked absolutely fine before updating. Now, the volume keys (volume up, down, and mute) are completely nonfunctional for my monitor. I get the volume popup in the top right corner, but nothing changes.

Opening the panel and dragging the slider works, but the buttons do nothing.

EDIT: reverting to version 4.2 restored the functionality. These buttons work as expected and I'm not experiencing any issues in functionality, just the volume popup no longer displaying properly on MacOS26.

I noticed my keyboard sound control was sporadically working with a MacBook Pro M1 connected via DisplayPort to a Dell S2725QS. It turns out that the focus has to be on the external monitor for the volume controls to work. For example, if I have my mouse on the laptop screen, the keyboard volume controls do nothing, but if I move the mouse onto the external screen, they work to control the external screen volume. Is there a way to have them always control the volume regardless of focus or output device?
