Describe the bug
The tool seems to be working just fine. When you are working on the monitor the brightness is kept. When you use the keys while the focus is on the monitor the brightness changes, all is fine.
Reproduce
Then you work in a window on the laptop's screen for a while (3-7 minutes) without changing the focus to an app on the external monitor, the monitor starts to dimm and then it turns black within 30 seconds or so.

Hey, this is a function of the OS itself. You might want to disable "Automatically adjust brightness" under Displays in System Preferences.
