Before opening the issue, have you...?

  • Searched for existing issues
  • Looked through the wiki
  • Updated MonitorControl to the latest version (if applicable)

Describe the bug

Everything was working fine for many months.

Last night I restarted (no macOS update, AFAIK), and now the "Depends on mouse pointer position" stopped working - regardless of where my mouse pointer is, when I use the keyboard brightness keys, MonitorControl changes brightness only on the built-in monitor.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Put mouse pointer on external monitor
  2. Tap brightness keys on keyboard
  3. Observe that brightness changes only on the built in monitor

Expected behavior

The external monitor brightness should change when the mouse pointer is on the external monitor

Anything else?

I tried resetting all settings on MonitorControl - that made no difference.
I tried unplugging and reconnecting the external monitor - made no difference.

Environment Information (please complete the following information)

- macOS version: 26.3
- Mac model: MacBook Air M4
- MonitorControl version: 4.3.3 build 7123
- Monitor(s): Built-in (of course!) and HP Z32k G3
- Apple Silicon/M1 (yes or no): Yes

@waydabber commented on GitHub (Mar 2, 2026):

It's probably because the app is not capturing keyboard shortcuts. I recommend checking accessibility permission settings or resetting the permissions database and re-adding the app if nothing else helps.
